CIIM 2017 Problem 5

  • Day 2

Let S\mathcal{S} be a set of integers. Given a real positive rr, we say that S\mathcal{S} is a rr - discerning, if for any pair m,n>1m, n > 1 of distinct integers such that ∣m−nm+n∣<r\left| \frac{m-n}{m+n} \right| < r, there exists a∈Sa \in \mathcal{S} and k≥1k \geq 1 such that aka^k divides mm but not nn, or aka^k divides nn but not mm

  1. Show that for every r>0r > 0 every rr - discerning set contains an infinite number of primes.

  2. For every r>0r > 0 determine the maximal possible cardinality of P\S\mathcal{P} \backslash \mathcal{S} where P\mathcal{P} is the set of primes and S⊆P\mathcal{S} \subseteq \mathcal{P} is a rr - discerning set.
