ELMO 2021 Problem 5

    Let nn and kk be positive integers. Two infinite sequences {si}i≥1\{s_i\}_{i\geq 1} and {ti}i≥1\{t_i\}_{i\geq 1} are equivalent if, for all positive integers ii and jj , si=sjs_i = s_j if and only if ti=tjt_i = t_j . A sequence {ri}i≥1\{r_i\}_{i\geq 1} has equi-period kk if r1,r2,…r_1, r_2, \ldots and rk+1,rk+2,…r_{k+1}, r_{k+2}, \ldots are equivalent.

Suppose MM infinite sequences with equi-period kk whose terms are in the set {1,…,n}\{1, \ldots, n\} can be chosen such that no two chosen sequences are equivalent to each other. Determine the largest possible value of MM in terms of nn and kk .
