VMO 1969 Problem 4

Two circles centers OO and O′O' , radii RR and R′R' , meet at two points. A variable line LL meets the circles at A,C,B,DA, C, B, D in that order and ACAD=CBBD\frac{AC}{AD} = \frac{CB}{BD} . The perpendiculars from OO and O′O' to LL have feet HH and H′H' . Find the locus of HH and H′H' . If OO′2<R2+R′2OO'^2 < R^2 + R'^2 , find a point PP on LL such that PO+PO′PO + PO' has the smallest possible value. Show that this value does not depend on the position of LL . Comment on the case OO′2>R2+R′2OO'^2 > R^2 + R'^2 .
