USAMO 1987 Problem 3

XX is the smallest set of polynomials p(x)p(x) such that: (1) p(x)=xp(x)=x belongs to XX; and (2) if r(x)r(x) belongs to XX, then xr(x)x r(x) and (x+(1−x)r(x))(x+(1-x) r(x)) both belong to XX. Show that if r(x)r(x) and s(x)s(x) are distinct elements of XX, then r(x)≠s(x)\mathrm{r}(\mathrm{x}) \neq \mathrm{s}(\mathrm{x}) for any 0<x<10<\mathrm{x}<1.
