A function f:[0,∞)→[0,∞)f: [0, \infty) \to [0, \infty) is max-poly if there exist finitely many polynomials with real coefficients p1(x),p2(x),…,pn(x)p_1(x), p_2(x), \ldots, p_n(x) such that

  • pi(x)≥0p_i(x) \geq 0 for all x≥0x \geq 0 and 1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n, and
  • f(x)=max⁡(p1(x),p2(x),…,pn(x))f(x) = \max(p_1(x), p_2(x), \ldots, p_n(x)) for all x≥0x \geq 0.

Determine whether the function f(x)=min⁡(x,x2)f(x) = \min(x, x^2) is max-poly.

Let pp be a prime number. Given a square matrix MM with entries in Z/pZ\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}, an eigenvector of MM is a non-zero vector v\mathbf{v} with entries in Z/pZ\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z} such that Mv=λvM\mathbf{v} = \lambda\mathbf{v} for some λ∈Z/pZ\lambda \in \mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}.

For each positive integer nn, determine the average number of eigenvectors of an n×nn \times n matrix with entries in Z/pZ\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}.

(Here Z/pZ\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z} refers to the integers modulo pp.)

Let VV be a finite-dimensional subspace of the real vector space of C∞C^\infty functions from R\mathbb{R} to R\mathbb{R}. Suppose that for all functions g(x)∈Vg(x) \in V, we have g(2x)∈Vg(2x) \in V.

Prove that every function in VV is a polynomial.

(A function from R\mathbb{R} to R\mathbb{R} is C∞C^\infty if its kk-th derivative exists at every point, for all positive integers kk.)

The following problem is open in the sense that the answer to part (b) is not currently known. A solution to part (a) will be awarded 7 points. Up to 7 additional points may be awarded for progress on part (b).

(a) Determine all triples of integers (x,y,q)(x, y, q) that satisfy the equation

x3+x2+x+1=yq,x^3 + x^2 + x + 1 = y^q,

where q≥3q \geq 3 is odd.

(b) Determine all quadruples of integers (x,y,n,q)(x, y, n, q) that satisfy the equation

xn+xn−1+⋯+x+1=yq,x^n + x^{n-1} + \cdots + x + 1 = y^q,

where n,q≥2n, q \geq 2.
