  • Session A

A-5. Let CC denote the family of continuous functions on the real axis. Let TT be a mapping of CC into CC which has the following properties:

  1. TT is linear, i.e. T(c1ψ1+c2ψ2)=c1Tψ1+c2Tψ2T\left(c_{1} \psi_{1}+c_{2} \psi_{2}\right)=c_{1} T \psi_{1}+c_{2} T \psi_{2}, for c1c_{1} and c2c_{2} real and ψ1\psi_{1} and ψ2\psi_{2} in CC.
  2. TT is local, i.e. if ψ1≡ψ2\psi_{1} \equiv \psi_{2} in some interval II then also Tψ1≡Tψ2T \psi_{1} \equiv T \psi_{2} holds in II.

Show that TT must necessarily be of the form Tψ(x)=f(x)ψ(x)T \psi(x)=f(x) \psi(x) where f(x)f(x) is a suitable continuous function.
