Putnam 1947 B3

  • Session B
  1. Let x,yx, y be Cartesian coordinates in the plane. II denotes the line segment 1≤x≤3,y=11 \leq x \leq 3, y=1. For every point PP on II, let P∗P^{*} denote that point that lies on the segment joining the origin to PP and such that the distance PP∗P P^{*} is equal to 1/1001 / 100. As PP describes II, the corresponding point P∗P^{*} describes a certain curve C∗C^{*}. Let l(I),l(C∗)l(I), l\left(C^{*}\right) be the lengths of II and C∗C^{*} respectively. Which one of l(I),l(C∗)l(I), l\left(C^{*}\right) is greater? Prove your answer.
