Problem 1

The real numbers x1,x2,...,xnx_1, x_2, ... , x_n belong to the interval (0,1)(0,1) and satisfy x1+x2+...+xn=m+rx_1 + x_2 + ... + x_n = m + r , where mm is an integer and r∈[0,1)r \in [0,1) . Show that x12+x22+...+xn2≤m+r2x_1 ^2 + x_2 ^2 + ... + x_n ^2 \leq m + r^2 .

Problem 2

For a permutation P=(p1,p2,...,pn)P = (p_1, p_2, ... , p_n) of (1,2,...,n)(1, 2, ... , n) define X(P)X(P) as the number of jj such that pi<pjp_i < p_j for every i<ji < j . What is the expected value of X(P)X(P) if each permutation is equally likely?

Problem 3

WW is a polygon which has a center of symmetry SS such that if PP belongs to WW , then so does P′P' , where SS is the midpoint of PP′PP' . Show that there is a parallelogram VV containing WW such that the midpoint of each side of VV lies on the border of WW .

Problem 4

dd is a positive integer and f:[0,d]→Rf : [0,d] \rightarrow \mathbb{R} is a continuous function with f(0)=f(d)f(0) = f(d) . Show that there exists x∈[0,d−1]x \in [0,d-1] such that f(x)=f(x+1)f(x) = f(x+1) .

Problem 5

The sequence a1,a2,a3,...a_1, a_2, a_3, ... is defined by a1=a2=a3=1a_1 = a_2 = a_3 = 1 , an+3=an+2an+1+ana_{n+3} = a_{n+2}a_{n+1} + a_n . Show that for any positive integer rr we can find ss such that asa_s is a multiple of rr .

Problem 6

Find the largest possible volume for a tetrahedron which lies inside a hemisphere of radius 11 .
