Other problems

Problem 1

Determine all functions ff defined in the set of rational numbers and taking their values in the same set such that the equation f(x+y)+f(x−y)=2f(x)+2f(y)f(x+y)+f(x-y)=2 f(x)+2 f(y) holds for all rational numbers xx and yy.

Problem 2

Let C1C_{1} and C2C_{2} be two circles intersecting at AA and BB. Let SS and TT be the centres of C1C_{1} and C2C_{2}, respectively. Let PP be a point on the segment ABA B such that ∣AP∣≠∣BP∣|A P| \neq|B P| and P≠A,P≠BP \neq A, P \neq B. We draw a line perpendicular to SPS P through PP and denote by CC and DD the points at which this line intersects C1C_{1}. We likewise draw a line perpendicular to TP through PP and denote by EE and FF the points at which this line intersects C2C_{2}. Show that C,D,EC, D, E, and FF are the vertices of a rectangle.

Problem 3

(a) For which positive numbers nn does there exist a sequence x1,x2,…,xnx_{1}, x_{2}, \ldots, x_{n}, which contains each of the numbers 1, 2, ..., nn exactly once and for which x1+x2+⋯+xkx_{1}+x_{2}+\cdots+x_{k} is divisible by kk for each k=1,2,…,nk=1,2, \ldots, n ?

(b) Does there exist an infinite sequence x1,x2,x3,…x_{1}, x_{2}, x_{3}, \ldots, which contains every positive integer exactly once and such that x1+x2+⋯+xkx_{1}+x_{2}+\cdots+x_{k} is divisible by kk for every positive integer kk ?

Problem 4

Let nn be a positive integer. Count the number of numbers k∈{0,1,2,…,n}k \in\{0,1,2, \ldots, n\} such that (nk)\binom{n}{k} is odd. Show that this number is a power of two, i.e. of the form 2p2^{p} for some nonnegative integer pp.
