Let kk, ss and nn be positive integers such that s<(2k+1)2s<(2k+1)^2, and let RR be the set of lattice points (x,y)(x,y) in the plane, satisfying 1≤x,y≤n1\le x,y\le n. On the grid RR we perform the following procedure. Initially, we colour one point of RR green; all other points in RR are coloured white. On every move, we choose a square SS, consisting of (2k+1)×(2k+1){\color{red}(2k+1)\times(2k+1)} lattice points in such a way that the center of SS is green and it contains at least ss white points; then we re-colour ss white points of SS to green. We repeat this step as long as there is a suitable square SS. We say that the number ss is kk-sparse , if there exists a positive real number CC such that, for every nn, for every choice of the initial green point, and for every valid sequence of moves, the total number of green points in the grid cannot exceed CnCn. Determine the least kk-sparse positive integer ss in terms of kk.
