BG-MO 2004 Problem 6

    Let pp be a prime number and let 0≤a1<a2<⋯<am<p0\leq a_{1}< a_{2}<\cdots < a_{m}< p and 0≤b1<b2<⋯<bn<p0\leq b_{1}< b_{2}<\cdots < b_{n}< p be arbitrary integers. Let kk be the number of distinct residues modulo pp that ai+bja_{i}+b_{j} give when ii runs from 1 to mm , and jj from 1 to nn . Prove that

    a) if m+n>pm+n > p then k=pk = p ;

    b) if m+n≤pm+n\leq p then k≥m+n−1k\geq m+n-1 .
