BALKAN 2013 Problem 1

  • Paper

We denote the angles of the triangle by α,β\alpha, \beta and γ\gamma as usual. Since ∠KMP=90∘−β2\angle K M P=90^{\circ}-\frac{\beta}{2}, it suffices to prove that ∠KLP=90∘+β2\angle K L P=90^{\circ}+\frac{\beta}{2}, which is equivalent to ∠KLC=β2\angle K L C=\frac{\beta}{2}. Let II be the incenter of triangle ABCA B C and let DD be the tangency point of the incircle with ABA B. Since CK∥IBC K \| I B and CL∥IAC L \| I A, it holds that ∠KCL=∠AIB\angle K C L=\angle A I B. Moreover, from CN=AD=b+c−a2C N=A D=\frac{b+c-a}{2} and ∠KCN=β2\angle K C N=\frac{\beta}{2} we obtain CK=CNcos⁡β2=C K=C N \cos \frac{\beta}{2}= ADcos⁡β2=AIcos⁡α2cos⁡β2A D \cos \frac{\beta}{2}=A I \cos \frac{\alpha}{2} \cos \frac{\beta}{2} and analogously CL=BIcos⁡α2cos⁡β2C L=B I \cos \frac{\alpha}{2} \cos \frac{\beta}{2}, which imply CKCL=AIBI\frac{C K}{C L}=\frac{A I}{B I}. Hence the triangles KCLK C L and AIBA I B are similar, and thus ∠KLC=\angle K L C= ∠ABI=β2\angle A B I=\frac{\beta}{2}.
