Problem 1

Let α\alpha be an arbitrary angle and let x=cosα,y=cosnαx = cos\alpha, y = cosn\alpha ( n∈Zn \in Z ). i) Prove that to each value x∈[−1,1]x \in [-1, 1] corresponds one and only one value of yy . Thus we can write yy as a function of x,y=Tn(x)x, y = T_n(x) . Compute T1(x),T2(x)T_1(x), T_2(x) and prove that Tn+1(x)=2xTn(x)−Tn−1(x)T_{n+1}(x) = 2xT_n(x) - T_{n-1}(x) . From this it follows that Tn(x)T_n(x) is a polynomial of degree nn . ii) Prove that the polynomial Tn(xT_n(x ) has nn distinct roots in [−1,1][-1, 1] .

Problem 2

For any positive integer n, let f(n) = ∑ (-1)(d−1)/2^{(d-1)/2} where the sum is taken over all odd d dividing n. Show that: f(2n2^n) = 1 f(p) = 2 for p a prime congruent to 1 mod 4 f(p) = 0 for p a prime congruent to 3 mod 4 f(pnp^n) = n+1 for p a prime congruent to 1 mod 4 f(pnp^n) = 1 for p a prime congruent to 3 mod 4, and n even f(pnp^n) = 0 for p a prime congruent to 3 mod 4, and n odd Show that f(mn) = f(m) f(n) for m and n relatively prime. Find f(54112817195^411^{28}17^{19}) and f(1980). Show how to calculate f(n).

Problem 3

ABCABC is a triangle. UU is a point on the line BCBC . II is the midpoint of BCBC . The line through CC parallel to AIAI meets the line AUAU at EE . The line through EE parallel to BCBC meets the line ABAB at FF . The line through EE parallel to ABAB meets the line BCBC at HH . The line through HH parallel to AUAU meets the line ABAB at KK . The lines HKHK and FGFG meet at T.VT. V is the point on the line AUAU such that AA is the midpoint of UVUV . Show that V,TV, T and II are collinear.

Problem 4

Let ABCDABCD be a regular tetrahedron with side aa . Take E,E′E,E' on the edge AB,F,F′AB, F, F' on the edge ACAC and G,G′G,G' on the edge AD so that AE=a/6,AE′=5a/6,AF=a/4,AF′=3a/4,AG=a/3,AG′=2a/3AE =a/6,AE' = 5a/6,AF= a/4,AF'= 3a/4,AG = a/3,AG'= 2a/3 . Compute the volume of EFGE′F′G′EFGE'F'G' in term of aa and find the angles between the lines AB,AC,ADAB,AC,AD and the plane EFGEFG .
