TSTST 2026 Problem 2

    Given a graph GG and a positive integer ℓ\ell, an ℓ\ell-coloring of GG is a function σ ⁣:V(G)→{1,2,3,…,ℓ}\sigma \colon V(G) \to \{1, 2, 3, \ldots, \ell\} such that for any edge uvuv in GG, σ(u)≠σ(v)\sigma(u) \neq \sigma(v). Two ℓ\ell-colorings σ\sigma and σ′\sigma' are close if σ(u)≠σ′(u)\sigma(u) \neq \sigma'(u) for at most one u∈V(G)u \in V(G).

    Find all pairs of positive integers (k,m)(k, m) with k≤mk \leq m such that for all graphs GG and pairs (τ,τ′)(\tau, \tau') of kk-colorings of GG, there exists a sequence π0,π1,…,πn\pi_0, \pi_1, \ldots, \pi_n of mm-colorings of GG such that π0=τ\pi_0 = \tau, πn=τ′\pi_n = \tau', and πi\pi_i and πi+1\pi_{i+1} are close for all 0≤i<n0 \leq i < n.

Note: V(G)V(G) denotes the vertices of GG. Since k≤mk \leq m, τ\tau and τ′\tau' are also mm-colorings of GG.
