Let a,b,ca, b, c be real numbers such that a≠0a \neq 0 . Consider the parabola with equation y=ax2+bx+c,y = ax^2 + bx + c, and the lines defined by the six equations \begin{align*} &y = ax + b, & y = bx + c, & y = cx + a, &y = bx + a, & y = cx + b, & y = ax + c. \end{align*} Suppose that the parabola intersects each of these lines in at most one point. Determine the maximum and minimum possible values of ca\frac{c}{a} .

Let n≥2n \ge 2 be an integer, and let OO be the n×nn \times n matrix whose entries are all equal to 00 . Two distinct entries of the matrix are chosen uniformly at random, and those two entries are changed from 00 to 11 . Call the resulting matrix AA . Determine the probability that A2=OA^2 = O , as a function of nn .

Let nn be a positive integer. There are nn lamps, each with a switch that changes the lamp from on to off, or from off to on, each time it is pressed. The lamps are initially all off. You are going to press the switches in a series of rounds. In the first round, you are going to press exactly 11 switch; in the second round, you are going to press exactly 22 switches; and so on, so that in the kk th round you are going to press exactly kk switches. In each round you will press each switch at most once. Your goal is to finish a round with all of the lamps switched on. Determine for which nn you can achieve this goal.

(ii) For every real number xx and every integer n≥1n \ge 1 we have f(x)=n2∫x−1nx+1nf(t)dt.f(x) = \frac{n}{2} \int_{x-\frac{1}{n}}^{x+\frac{1}{n}} f(t) \mathrm dt.

The following problem is open in the sense that the answer to part (b) is not currently known. A proof of part (a) will be awarded 5 points. Up to 7 additional points may be awarded for progress on part (b).

Let p(x)p(x) be a polynomial of degree dd with coefficients belonging to the set of rational numbers Q\mathbb{Q} . Suppose that, for each 1≤k≤d−11 \le k \le d-1 , p(x)p(x) and its kk th derivative p(k)(x)p^{(k)}(x) have a common root in Q\mathbb{Q} ; that is, there exists rk∈Qr_k \in \mathbb{Q} such that p(rk)=p(k)(rk)=0p(r_k) = p^{(k)}(r_k) = 0 . (a) Prove that if dd is prime then there exist constants a,b,c∈Qa, b, c \in \mathbb{Q} such that p(x)=c(ax+b)d.p(x) = c(ax + b)^d. (b) For which integers d≥2d \ge 2 does the conclusion of part (a) hold?
