SMO 2022 Problem 5

Let n≥2n\ge 2 be a positive integer. For any integer aa, let Pa(x)P_a(x) denote the polynomial xn+axx^n+ax. Let pp be a prime number and define the set SaS_a as the set of residues mod pp that Pa(x)P_a(x) attains. That is, Sa={b∣0≤b≤p−1, and there is c such that Pa(c)≡b(modp)}.S_a=\{b\mid 0\le b\le p-1,\text{ and there is }c\text{ such that }P_a(c)\equiv b \pmod{p}\}. Show that the expression 1p−1∑a=1p−1∣Sa∣\frac{1}{p-1}\sum\limits_{a=1}^{p-1}|S_a| is an integer.
