SCHWEITZER 1977 Problem 5

Suppose that the automorphism group of the finite undirected graph X=(P,E)X=(P, E) is isomorphic to the quaternion group (of order 88 ). Prove that the adjacency matrix of XX has an eigenvalue of multiplicity at least 44 .

( P={1,2,…,n}P= \{ 1,2,\ldots, n \} is the set of vertices of the graph XX . The set of edges EE is a subset of the set of all unordered pairs of elements of PP . The group of automorphisms of XX consists of those permutations of PP that map edges to edges. The adjacency matrix M=[mij]M=[m_{ij}] is the n×nn \times n matrix defined by mij=1m_{ij}=1 if {i,j}∈E\{ i,j \} \in E and mi,j=0m_{i,j}=0 otherwise.)
