Problem 1

Consider the endomorphism ring of an Abelian torsion-free (resp. torsion) group GG . Prove that this ring is Neumann-regular if and only if GG is a discrete direct sum of groups isomorphic to the additive group of the rationals (resp. ,a discrete direct sum of cyclic groups of prime order). (A ring RR is called Neumann-regular if for every α∈R\alpha \in R there exists a β∈R\beta \in R such that αβα=α\alpha \beta \alpha=\alpha .)

Problem 7

For every natural number rr , the set of rr -tuples of natural numbers is partitioned into finitely many classes. Show that if f(r)f(r) is a function such that f(r)≥1f(r)\geq 1 and lim⁡r→∞f(r)=+∞\lim _{r\rightarrow \infty} f(r)=+\infty , then there exists an infinite set of natural numbers that, for all rr , contains rr -triples from at most f(r)f(r) classes. Show that if f(r)↛+∞f(r) \not \rightarrow +\infty , then there is a family of partitions such that no such infinite set exists.

Problem 10

Let hh be a triangle of perimeter 11 , and let HH be a triangle of perimeter λ\lambda homothetic to hh . Let h1,h2,...h_1,h_2,... be translates of hh such that , for all ii , hih_i is different from hi+2h_{i+2} and touches HH and hi+1h_{i+1} (that is, intersects without overlapping). For which values of λ\lambda can these triangles be chosen so that the sequence h1,h2,...h_1,h_2,... is periodic? If λ≥1\lambda \geq 1 is such a value, then determine the number of different triangles in a periodic chain h1,h2,...h_1,h_2,... and also the number of times such a chain goes around the triangle HH .
