Day 1

Problem 1

  • Day 1

Let n>10n > 10 be an integer, and let A1,A2,…,AnA_{1},A_{2},\ldots ,A_{n} be distinct points in the plane such that the distances between the points are pairwise different. Define f10(j,k)f_{10}(j,k) to be the 10th10^{\mathrm{th}} smallest of the distances from AjA_{j} to A1,A2,…,AkA_{1},A_{2},\ldots ,A_{k} , excluding AjA_{j} if k≥jk\geq j . Suppose that for all jj and kk satisfying 11≤j≤k≤n11\leq j\leq k\leq n , we have f10(j,j−1)≥f10(k,j−1)f_{10}(j,j - 1)\geq f_{10}(k,j - 1) . Prove that f10(j,n)≥12f10(n,n)f_{10}(j,n)\geq {\frac{1}{2}}f_{10}(n,n) for all jj in the range 1≤j≤n−11\leq j\leq n - 1 .

Problem 2

  • Day 1

Consider an infinite sequence of positive integers a1,a2,a3,…a_{1},a_{2},a_{3},\ldots such that a1>1a_{1} > 1 and (2an−1)an+1(2^{a_{n}} - 1)a_{n + 1} is a square for all positive integers nn . Is it possible for two terms of such a sequence to be equal?

Problem 3

  • Day 1

Fix an integer n≥3n\geq 3 . Determine the smallest positive integer kk satisfying the following condition:

For any tree TT with vertices v1,v2,…,vnv_{1},v_{2},\ldots ,v_{n} and any pairwise distinct complex numbers z1,z2,…,znz_{1},z_{2},\ldots ,z_{n} , there is a polynomial P(X,Y)P(X,Y) with complex coefficients of total degree at most kk such that for all i≠ji\neq j satisfying 1≤i,j≤n1\leq i,j\leq n , we have P(zi,zj)=0P(z_{i},z_{j}) = 0 if and only if there is an edge in TT joining viv_{i} to vjv_{j} .

Note, for example, that the total degree of the polynomial

9X3Y4+XY5+X6−29X^{3}Y^{4} + XY^{5} + X^{6} - 2

is 7 because 7=3+47 = 3 + 4 .

Problem 4

  • Day 2

Let Z\mathbb{Z} denote the set of integers, and let S⊂ZS \subset \mathbb{Z} be the set of integers that are at least 1010010^{100} . Fix a positive integer cc . Determine all functions f:S→Zf: S \to \mathbb{Z} satisfying f(xy+c)=f(x)+f(y)f(xy + c) = f(x) + f(y) for all x,y∈Sx, y \in S .

Problem 5

  • Day 2

Let ABCA B C be an acute triangle with AB<ACA B< A C , and let HH and oo be its orthocentre and circumcentre, respectively. Let Γ\Gamma be the circumcircle of triangle BOCB O C . Circle Γ\Gamma intersects line AOA O at points oo and A′A^{\prime} , and Γ\Gamma intersects the circle of radius AOA O with centre AA at points oo and FF . Prove that the circle which has diameter AA′A A^{\prime} , the circumcircle of triangle AFHA F H and Γ\Gamma pass through a common point.

Problem 6

  • Day 2

Let kk and mm be integers greater than 1. Consider kk pairwise disjoint sets S1,S2,…,SkS_{1}, S_{2}, \ldots , S_{k} , each of which has exactly m+1m + 1 elements: one red and mm blue. Let F\mathcal{F} be the family of all subsets TT of S1∪S2∪⋯∪SkS_{1} \cup S_{2} \cup \dots \cup S_{k} such that, for every ii , the intersection T∩SiT \cap S_{i} is monochromatic. Determine the largest possible number of sets in a subfamily G⊆F\mathcal{G} \subseteq \mathcal{F} such that no two sets in G\mathcal{G} are disjoint.

A set is monochromatic if all of its elements have the same colour. In particular, the empty set is monochromatic.
