  1. A function D(n)D(n) of the positive integral variable nn is defined by the following properties: D(1)=0,D(p)=1D(1)=0, D(p)=1 if pp is a prime, D(uv)=uD(v)+D(u v)=u D(v)+ vD(u)v D(u) for any two positive integers uu and vv. Answer all three parts below. (i) Show that these properties are compatible and determine uniquely D(n)\boldsymbol{D}(n). (Derive a formula for D(n)/n\boldsymbol{D}(n) / n, assuming that n=p1α1p2α2⋯pkαkn=p_{1}^{\alpha_{1}} p_{2}{ }^{\alpha_{2}} \cdots p_{k}{ }^{\alpha_{k}} where p1,p2,…,pkp_{1}, p_{2}, \ldots, p_{k} are different primes.) (ii) For what values of nn is D(n)=nD(n)=n ? (iii) Define D2(n)=D[D(n)]D^{2}(n)=D[D(n)], etc., and find the limit of Dm(63)D^{m}(63) as mm tends to ∞\infty.

  1. The cross-section of a right cylinder is an ellipse, with semi-axes aa and bb, where a>ba>b. The cylinder is very long, made of very light homogeneous material. The cylinder rests on the horizontal ground which it touches along the straight line joining the lower endpoints of the minor axes of its several cross-sections. Along the upper endpoints of these minor axes lies a very heavy homogeneous wire, straight and just as long as the cylinder. The wire and the cylinder are rigidly connected. We neglect the weight of the cylinder, the breadth of the wire, and the friction of the ground.

The system described is in equilibrium, because of its symmetry. This equilibrium seems to be stable when the ratio b/ab / a is very small, but unstable when this ratio comes close to 1 . Examine this assertion and find the value of the ratio b/ab / a which separates the cases of stable and unstable equilibrium.

(page 306) (ii) A plane varies so that it includes a cone of constant volume equal to πa3/3\pi a^{3} / 3 with the surface the equation of which in rectangular coordinates is 2xy=z22 x y=z^{2}. Find the equation of the envelope of the various positions of this plane.

  1. Consider the closed plane curves CiC_{i} and CoC_{o}, their respective lengths ∣Ci∣\left|C_{i}\right| and ∣Co∣\left|C_{o}\right|, the closed surfaces SiS_{i} and SoS_{o}, and their respective areas ∣Si∣\left|S_{i}\right| and ∣So∣\left|S_{o}\right|. Assume that CiC_{i} lies inside CoC_{o} and SiS_{i} inside SoS_{o}. (Subscript ii stands for "inner," oo for "outer.") Prove the correct assertions among the following four, and disprove the others. (i) If CiC_{i} is convex, ∣Ci∣≤∣Co∣\left|C_{i}\right| \leq\left|C_{o}\right|. (ii) If SiS_{i} is convex, ∣Si∣≤∣So∣\left|S_{i}\right| \leq\left|S_{o}\right|. (iii) If CoC_{o} is the smallest convex curve containing CiC_{i}, then ∣Co∣≤∣Ci∣\left|C_{o}\right| \leq\left|C_{i}\right|. (iv) If SoS_{o} is the smallest convex surface containing SiS_{i}, then ∣So∣≤∣Si∣\left|S_{o}\right| \leq\left|S_{i}\right|.

You may assume that CiC_{i} and CoC_{o} are polygons and SiS_{i} and SoS_{o} polyhedra. (Why?)
