Other problems

Problem 1

An even number of politicians are sitting at a round table. After a break, they come back and sit down again in arbitrary places. Show that there must be two people with the same number of people sitting between them as before the break..

Additional problem: Solve the problem when the number of people is in a form 6k+36k+3 .

Problem 2

k1,k2,k3k_1, k_2, k_3 are three circles. k2k_2 and k3k_3 touch externally at PP , k3k_3 and k1k_1 touch externally at QQ , and k1k_1 and k2k_2 touch externally at RR . The line PQPQ meets k1k_1 again at SS , the line PRPR meets k1k_1 again at TT . The line RSRS meets k2k_2 again at UU , and the line QTQT meets k3k_3 again at VV . Show that P,U,VP, U, V are collinear.

Problem 3

The edges of a cube are labeled from 11 to 1212 . Show that there must exist at least eight triples (i,j,k)(i, j, k) with 1≤i<j<k≤121 \leq i < j < k \leq 12 so that the edges i,j,ki, j, k are consecutive edges of a path. Also show that there exists labeling in which we cannot find nine such triples.

Problem 4

n,kn, k are positive integers. A0A_0 is the set {1,2,...,n}\{1, 2, ... , n\} . AiA_i is a randomly chosen subset of Ai−1A_{i-1} (with each subset having equal probability). Show that the expected number of elements of AkA_k is n2k\dfrac{n}{2^k}

Problem 5

Three circles of radius aa are drawn on the surface of a sphere of radius rr . Each pair of circles touches externally and the three circles all lie in one hemisphere. Find the radius of a circle on the surface of the sphere which touches all three circles.

Problem 6

Show that for positive reals a,b,c,da, b, c, d we have (ab+ac+ad+bc+bd+cd6)3≥(abc+abd+acd+bcd4)2\left(\dfrac{ab + ac + ad + bc + bd + cd}{6} \right)^3 \geq \left(\dfrac{abc + abd + acd + bcd}{4}\right)^2
