Other problems

Problem 1

There are n≥2n \ge 2 points in a square side 11 . Show that one can label the points P1,P2,...,PnP_1, P_2, ... , P_n such that ∑i=1n∣Pi−1−Pi∣2≤4\sum_{i=1}^n |P_{i-1} - P_i|^2 \le 4 , where we use cyclic subscripts, so that P0P_0 means PnP_n .

Problem 2

A regular nn -gon is inscribed in a circle radius 11 . Let XX be the set of all arcs PQPQ , where P,QP, Q are distinct vertices of the nn -gon. 55 elements L1,L2,...,L5L_1, L_2, ... , L_5 of XX are chosen at random (so two or more of the LiL_i can be the same). Show that the expected length of L1∩L2∩L3∩L4∩L5L_1 \cap L_2 \cap L_3 \cap L_4 \cap L_5 is independent of nn .

Problem 3

w(x)w(x) is a polynomial with integer coefficients. Let pnp_n be the sum of the digits of the number w(n)w(n) . Show that some value must occur infinitely often in the sequence p1,p2,p3,...p_1, p_2, p_3, ... .

Problem 4

Let SS be the set of all tetrahedra which satisfy: (1) the base has area 11 , (2) the total face area is 44 , and (3) the angles between the base and the other three faces are all equal. Find the element of SS which has the largest volume.

Problem 5

Find the smallest nn such that n2−n+11n^2 -n+11 is the product of four primes (not necessarily distinct).

Problem 6

A plane is tiled with regular hexagons of side 11 . AA is a fixed hexagon vertex. Find the number of paths PP such that: (1) one endpoint of PP is AA , (2) the other endpoint of PP is a hexagon vertex, (3) PP lies along hexagon edges, (4) PP has length 6060 , and (5) there is no shorter path along hexagon edges from AA to the other endpoint of PP .
