Other problems

Problem 1

Let a0,a1,a2,...a_0,a_1,a_2,... be an infinite sequence of positive integers such that a0=1a_0 = 1 and ai2>ai−1ai+1a_i^2 > a_{i-1}a_{i+1} for all i>0i > 0 . (a) Prove that ai<a1ia_i < a_1^i for all i>1i > 1 . (b) Prove that ai>ia_i > i for all ii .

Problem 2

Let be given an n×nn \times n chessboard, n∈Nn \in N . We wish to tile it using particular tetraminos which can be rotated. For which nn is this possible if we use (a) TT -tetraminos (b) both kinds of LL -tetraminos?

Problem 3

Let nn be a positive integer. (a) Prove that 15+35+55+...+(2n−1)51^5 +3^5 +5^5 +...+(2n-1)^5 is divisible by nn . (b) Prove that 13+33+53+...+(2n−1)31^3 +3^3 +5^3 +...+(2n-1)^3 is divisible by n2n^2 .

Problem 4

Let A,B,PA,B,P be points on a line ℓ\ell , with PP outside the segment ABAB . Lines aa and bb pass through AA and BB and are perpendicular to ℓ\ell . A line mm through PP , which is neither parallel nor perpendicular to ℓ\ell , intersects aa and bb at QQ and RR , respectively. The perpendicular from BB to ARAR meets aa and ARAR at SS and UU , and the perpendicular from AA to BQBQ meets bb and BQBQ at TT and VV , respectively. (a) Prove that P,S,TP,S,T are collinear. (b) Prove that P,U,VP,U,V are collinear.
