Other problems

Problem 1

A unit square is divided into two rectangles in such a way that the smaller rectangle can be put on the greater rectangle with every vertex of the smaller on exactly one of the edges of the greater. Calculate the dimensions of the smaller rectangle.

Problem 2

A sequence of integers a1,a2,a3,...a_1,a_2,a_3,... is such that a1=2,a2=3a_1=2, a_2=3 , and

an+1=2an−1a_{n+1}=2a_{n-1} or 3an−2an−13a_n-2a_{n-1} for all n≥2n \ge 2 .

Prove that no number between 16001600 and 20002000 can be an element of the sequence.

Problem 3

(a)(a) Prove that every multiple of 66 can be written as a sum of four cubes. (b)(b) Prove that every integer can be written as a sum of five cubes.

Problem 4

Let PP be a point on the diagonal BDBD of a rectangle ABCDABCD , FF be the projection of PP on BCBC , and H≠BH \not= B be the point on BCBC such that BF=FHBF=FH . If lines PCPC and AHAH intersect at QQ , prove that the areas of triangles APQAPQ and CHQCHQ are equal.

Problem 5

Three real numbers a,b,ca,b,c satisfy the inequality ∣ax2+bx+c∣≤1|ax^2+bx+c| \le 1 for all x∈[−1,1]x \in [-1,1] . Prove that ∣cx2+bx+a∣≤2|cx^2+bx+a| \le 2 for all x∈[−1,1]x \in [-1,1] .
