NL-NWO 1991 Problem 2

An angle with vertex AA and measure α\alpha and a point P0P_0 on one of its rays are given so that AP0=2AP_0=2 . Point P1P_1 is chose on the other ray. The sequence of points P1,P2,P3,...P_1,P_2,P_3,... is defined so that PnP_n lies on the segment APn−2AP_{n-2} and the triangle PnPn−1Pn−2P_n P_{n-1} P_{n-2} is isosceles with PnPn−1=PnPn−2P_n P_{n-1}=P_n P_{n-2} for all n≥2n \ge 2 . (a)(a) Prove that for each value of α\alpha there is a unique point P1P_1 for which the sequence P1,P2,...,Pn,...P_1,P_2,...,P_n,... does not terminate. (b)(b) Suppose that the sequence P1,P2,...P_1,P_2,... does not terminate and that the length of the polygonal line P0P1P2...PkP_0 P_1 P_2 ... P_k tends to 55 when k→∞k \rightarrow \infty . Compute the length of P0P1P_0 P_1 .
