Problem 1

Let a,ba,b be positive real numbers satisfying 2ab=a−b2ab=a-b . Denote for any positive integer kk xkx_k and yky_k to be the closest integer to akak and bkbk , respectively (if there are two closest integers, choose the larger one). Prove that any positive integer nn appears in the sequence (xk)k≥1(x_k)_{k\ge 1} if and only if it appears at least three times in the sequence (yk)k≥1(y_k)_{k\ge 1} .

Problem 2

Consider the closed polygonal discs P1P_1 , P2P_2 , P3P_3 with the property that for any three points A∈P1A\in P_1 , B∈P2B\in P_2 , C∈P3C\in P_3 , we have [△ABC]≤1[\triangle ABC]\le 1 . (Here [X][X] denotes the area of polygon XX .) (a) Prove that min⁡{[P1],[P2],[P3]}<4\min\{[P_1],[P_2],[P_3]\}<4 . (b) Give an example of polygons P1,P2,P3P_1,P_2,P_3 with the above property such that [P1]>4[P_1]>4 and [P2]>4[P_2]>4 .

Problem 3

Is it true that for integer n≥2n\ge 2 , and given any non-negative reals ℓij\ell_{ij} , 1≤i<j≤n1\le i<j\le n , we can find a sequence 0≤a1,a2,…,an0\le a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_n such that for all 1≤i<j≤n1\le i<j\le n to have ∣ai−aj∣≥ℓij|a_i-a_j|\ge \ell_{ij} , yet still ∑i=1nai≤∑1≤i<j≤nℓij\sum_{i=1}^n a_i\le \sum_{1\le i<j\le n}\ell_{ij} ?
