IT-CESENATICO 2011 Problem 2

A sequence of positive integers a1,a2,…,ana_1, a_2,\ldots, a_n is called ladder of length nn if it consists of nn consecutive integers in ascending order. (a) Prove that for every positive integer nn there exist two ladders of length nn , with no elements in common, a1,a2,…,ana_1, a_2,\ldots, a_n and b1,b2,…,bnb_1, b_2,\ldots, b_n , such that for all ii between 11 and nn , the greatest common divisor of aia_i and bib_i is equal to 11 . (b) Prove that for every positive integer nn there exist two ladders of length nn , with no elements in common, a1,a2,…,ana_1, a_2,\ldots, a_n and b1,b2,…,bnb_1, b_2,\ldots, b_n , such that for all ii between 11 and nn , the greatest common divisor of aia_i and bib_i is greater than 11 .
