INMO 2007 Problem 5

Let ABCA B C be a triangle in which AB=ACA B=A C. Let DD be the mid-point of BCB C and PP be a point on ADA D. Suppose EE is the foot of perpendicular from PP on ACA C. If APPD=BPPE=λ,BDAD=m\frac{A P}{P D}=\frac{B P}{P E}=\lambda, \frac{B D}{A D}=m and z=m2(1+λ)z=m^{2}(1+\lambda), prove that

    z2−(λ3−λ2−2)z+1=0z^{2}-\left(\lambda^{3}-\lambda^{2}-2\right) z+1=0

Hence show that λ≥2\lambda \geq 2 and λ=2\lambda=2 if and only if ABCA B C is equilateral.
