Other problems

Problem 1

In a non-equilateral triangle ABCA B C, the sides a,b,ca, b, c form an arithmetic progression. Let II and OO denote the incentre and circumcentre of the triangle respectively.

(i) Prove that IOI O is perpendicular to BIB I.

(ii) Suppose BIB I extended meets ACA C in KK, and D,ED, E are the midpoints of BC,BAB C, B A respectively. Prove that II is the circumcentre of triangle DKED K E.

Problem 2

Prove that for every positive integer nn there exists a unique ordered pair (a,b)(a, b) of positive integers such that

n=12(a+b−1)(a+b−2)+an=\frac{1}{2}(a+b-1)(a+b-2)+a

Problem 3

Let XX denote the set of all triples (a,b,c)(a, b, c) of integers. Define a function f:X→Xf: X \rightarrow X by

f(a,b,c)=(a+b+c,ab+bc+ca,abc)f(a, b, c)=(a+b+c, a b+b c+c a, a b c)

Find all triples (a,b,c)(a, b, c) in XX such that f(f(a,b,c))=(a,b,c)f(f(a, b, c))=(a, b, c).

Problem 4

Some 46 squares are randomly chosen from a 9×99 \times 9 chess board and are coloured red. Show that there exists a 2×22 \times 2 block of 4 squares of which at least three are coloured red.

Problem 5

In a cyclic quadrilateral ABCD,AB=a,BC=b,CD=c,∠ABC=120∘A B C D, A B=a, B C=b, C D=c, \angle A B C=120^{\circ}, and ∠ABD=\angle A B D= 30∘30^{\circ}. Prove that

(i) c≥a+bc \geq a+b;

(ii) ∣c+a−c+b∣=c−a−b|\sqrt{c+a}-\sqrt{c+b}|=\sqrt{c-a-b}.

Problem 6

(a) Prove that if nn is a positive integer such that n≥40112n \geq 4011^{2}, then there exists an integer ll such that n<l2<(1+12005)nn<l^{2}<\left(1+\frac{1}{2005}\right) n.

(b) Find the smallest positive integer MM for which whenever an integer nn is such that n≥Mn \geq M, there exists an integer ll, such that n<l2<(1+12005)nn<l^{2}<\left(1+\frac{1}{2005}\right) n.
