IMO 1973 Problem 5

  • Day 2

GG is a set of non-constant functions ff . Each ff is defined on the real line and has the form f(x)=ax+bf(x)=ax+b for some real a,ba,b . If ff and gg are in GG , then so is fgfg , where fgfg is defined by fg(x)=f(g(x))fg(x)=f(g(x)) . If ff is in GG , then so is the inverse f−1f^{-1} . If f(x)=ax+bf(x)=ax+b , then f−1(x)=x−baf^{-1}(x)= \frac{x-b}{a} . Every ff in GG has a fixed point (in other words we can find xfx_f such that f(xf)=xff(x_f)=x_f . Prove that all the functions in GG have a common fixed point.
