Day 1

Problem 2

  • Day 1

Establish if there exists a finite set MM of points in space, not all situated in the same plane, so that for any straight line dd which contains at least two points from M there exists another straight line d′d' , parallel with d,d, but distinct from dd , which also contains at least two points from MM .

Problem 3

  • Day 1

Determine the minimum value of a2+b2a^{2} + b^{2} when (a,b)(a,b) traverses all the pairs of real numbers for which the equation x4+ax3+bx2+ax+1=0x^{4} + ax^{3} + bx^{2} + ax + 1 = 0 has at least one real root.

Problem 5

  • Day 2

GG is a set of non-constant functions ff . Each ff is defined on the real line and has the form f(x)=ax+bf(x)=ax+b for some real a,ba,b . If ff and gg are in GG , then so is fgfg , where fgfg is defined by fg(x)=f(g(x))fg(x)=f(g(x)) . If ff is in GG , then so is the inverse f−1f^{-1} . If f(x)=ax+bf(x)=ax+b , then f−1(x)=x−baf^{-1}(x)= \frac{x-b}{a} . Every ff in GG has a fixed point (in other words we can find xfx_f such that f(xf)=xff(x_f)=x_f . Prove that all the functions in GG have a common fixed point.
