Let b≥3b \ge 3 be a positive integer and let σ\sigma be a nonidentity permutation of the set {0,1,…,b−1}\{0, 1, \ldots, b - 1\} such that σ(0)=0\sigma(0) = 0. The substitution cipher CσC_\sigma encrypts every positive integer nn by replacing each digit aa in the representation of nn in base bb with σ(a)\sigma(a). Let dd be any positive integer such that bb does not divide dd. We say that CσC_\sigma complies with dd if CσC_\sigma maps every multiple of dd onto a multiple of dd, and we say that dd is cryptic if there is some CσC_\sigma such that CσC_\sigma complies with dd. Let kk be any positive integer, and let p=2k+1p = 2^k + 1. a)a) Find the greatest power of 22 that is cryptic in base 2p2p, and prove that there is only one substitution cipher that complies with it. b)b) Find the greatest power of pp that is cryptic in base 2p2p, and prove that there is only one substitution cipher that complies with it. c)c) Suppose, furthermore, that pp is a prime number. Find the greatest cryptic positive integer in base 2p2p, and prove that there is only one substitution cipher that complies with it.
