HMIC 2024 Problem 4

    Given a positive integer nn, let [n]={1,2,…,n}[n]=\{1,2, \ldots, n\}.

    • Let ana_{n} denote the number of functions f:[n]→[n]f:[n] \rightarrow[n] such that f(f(i))≥if(f(i)) \geq i for all ii.
    • Let bnb_{n} denote the number of ordered set partitions of [ nn ], i.e., the number of ways to pick an integer kk and an ordered kk-tuple of pairwise disjoint nonempty sets (A1,…,Ak)\left(A_{1}, \ldots, A_{k}\right) whose union is [ nn ].

    Prove that an=bna_{n}=b_{n}.
