Problem 1

An exam at a university consists of one question randomly selected from the nn possible questions. A student knows only one question, but he can take the exam nn times. Express as a function of nn the probability pnp_n that the student will pass the exam. Does pnp_n increase or decrease as nn increases? Compute limn→∞pnlim_{n\to \infty}p_n . What is the largest lower bound of the probabilities pnp_n ?

Problem 2

Points A′,B′,C′A' ,B' ,C' on the respective sides BC,CA,ABBC,CA,AB of triangle ABCABC satisfy AC′AB=BA′BC=CB′CA=k\frac{AC' }{AB} = \frac{BA' }{BC} = \frac{CB' }{CA} = k . The lines AA′,BB′,CC′AA' ,BB' ,CC' form a triangle A1B1C1A_1B_1C_1 (possibly degenerate). Given kk and the area SS of △ABC\triangle ABC , compute the area of △A1B1C1\triangle A_1B_1C_1 .

Problem 4

Show that the number 19891989 as well as each of its powers 1989n1989^n ( n∈Nn \in N ), can be expressed as a sum of two positive squares in at least two ways.

Problem 5

Consider the set DD of all complex numbers of the form a+b−13a+b\sqrt{-13} with a,b∈Za,b \in Z . The number 14=14+0−1314 = 14+0\sqrt{-13} can be written as a product of two elements of DD : 14=2⋅714 = 2 \cdot 7 . Find all possible ways to express 1414 as a product of two elements of DD .

Problem 6

Prove that among any seven real numbers there exist two, aa and bb , such that 3∣a−b∣≤∣1+ab∣\sqrt3|a-b|\le |1+ab| . Give an example of six real numbers not having this property.
