Other problems

Problem 1

Determine all real solutions (x,y)(x,y) of the following system of equations: \begin{align*} x&=3x^2y-y^3, y &= x^3-3xy^2 \end{align*}

Problem 2

Let aa and bb be two circles, intersecting in two distinct points YY and ZZ . A circle kk touches the circles aa and bb externally in the points AA and BB .

Show that the angular bisectors of the angles ∠ZAY\angle ZAY and ∠YBZ\angle YBZ intersect on the line YZYZ .

Problem 3

In the cartesian plane consider rectangles with sides parallel to the coordinate axes. We say that one rectangle is below another rectangle if there is a line gg parallel to the xx -axis such that the first rectangle is below gg , the second one above gg and both rectangles do not touch gg .

Similarly, we say that one rectangle is to the right of another rectangle if there is a line hh parallel to the yy -axis such that the first rectangle is to the right of hh , the second one to the left of hh and both rectangles do not touch hh .

Show that any finite set of nn pairwise disjoint rectangles with sides parallel to the coordinate axes can be enumerated as a sequence (R1,…,Rn)(R_1,\dots,R_n) so that for all indices i,ji,j with 1≤i<j≤n1 \le i<j \le n the rectangle RiR_i is to the right of or below the rectangle RjR_j

Problem 4

Show that for each non-negative integer nn there are unique non-negative integers xx and yy such that we have n=(x+y)2+3x+y2.n=\frac{(x+y)^2+3x+y}{2}.

Problem 5

We are given two positive integers pp and qq .

Step by step, a rope of length 11 is cut into smaller pieces as follows: In each step all the currently longest pieces are cut into two pieces with the ratio p:qp:q at the same time. After an unknown number of such operations, the currently longest pieces have the length xx .

Determine in terms of xx the number a(x)a(x) of different lengths of pieces of rope existing at that time.

Problem 6

Suppose that real numbers x,yx,y and zz satisfy the following equations:

\begin{align*} x+\frac{y}{z} &=2, y+\frac{z}{x} &=2, z+\frac{x}{y} &=2. \end{align*}

Show that s=x+y+zs=x+y+z must be equal to 33 or 77 .

Note: It is not required to show the existence of such numbers x,y,zx,y,z .
