Problem 2

Let α\alpha be a real number with α>1\alpha>1 . Let the sequence (an)(a_n) be defined as an=1+2+3+…+n+n+1ααααa_n=1+\sqrt[\alpha]{2+\sqrt[\alpha]{3+\ldots+\sqrt[\alpha]{n+\sqrt[\alpha]{n+1}}}} for all positive integers nn . Show that there exists a positive real constant CC such that an<Ca_n<C for all positive integers nn .

Problem 3

Given two circles k1k_1 and k2k_2 which intersect at QQ and Q′.Q'. Let PP be a point on k2k_2 and inside of k1k_1 such that the line PQPQ intersects k1k_1 in a point X≠QX\ne Q and such that the tangent to k1k_1 at XX intersects k2k_2 in points AA and B.B. Let kk be the circle through A,BA,B which is tangent to the line through PP parallel to AB.AB. Prove that the circles k1k_1 and kk are tangent.

Problem 4

Let ABCDEFGHABCDEFGH be a cube of sidelength aa and such that AGAG is one of the space diagonals. Consider paths on the surface of this cube. Then determine the set of points PP on the surface for which the shortest path from PP to AA and from PP to GG have the same length l.l. Also determine all possible values of ll depending on a.a.

Problem 5

Five people form several commissions to prepare a competition. Here any commission must be nonempty and any two commissions cannot contain the same members. Moreover, any two commissions have at least one common member. There are already 1414 commissions. Prove that at least one additional commission can be formed.

Problem 6

Define a sequence (an)(a_n) by a1=1,a2=2,a_1 =1, a_2 =2, and ak+2=2ak+1+aka_{k+2}=2a_{k+1}+a_k for all positive integers kk . Determine all real numbers β>0\beta >0 which satisfy the following conditions:

(A) There are infinitely pairs of positive integers (p,q)(p,q) such that ∣pq−2∣<βq2.\left| \frac{p}{q}- \sqrt{2} \right| < \frac{\beta}{q^2 }. (B) There are only finitely many pairs of positive integers (p,q)(p,q) with ∣pq−2 ∣<βq2\left| \frac{p}{q}- \sqrt{2} \,\right| < \frac{\beta}{q^2 } for which there is no index kk with q=ak.q=a_k.
