Problem 1

A rectangular piece of paper has top edge ADAD . A line LL from AA to the bottom edge makes an angle xx with the line ADAD . We want to trisect xx . We take BB and CC on the vertical ege through AA such that AB=BCAB = BC . We then fold the paper so that CC goes to a point C′C' on the line LL and AA goes to a point A′A' on the horizontal line through BB . The fold takes BB to B′B' . Show that AA′AA' and AB′AB' are the required trisectors.

Problem 2

Let s(n)s(n) be the sum of all positive divisors of nn , so s(6)=12s(6) = 12 . We say nn is almost perfect if s(n)=2n−1s(n) = 2n - 1 . Let mod  (n,k)\mod(n, k) denote the residue of nn modulo kk (in other words, the remainder of dividing nn by kk ). Put t(n)=mod  (n,1)+mod  (n,2)+⋯+mod  (n,n)t(n) = \mod(n, 1) + \mod(n, 2) + \cdots + \mod(n, n) .

Show that nn is almost perfect if and only if t(n)=t(n−1)t(n) = t(n-1) .

Problem 3

Define ff on the positive integers by f(n)=k2+k+1f(n) = k^2 + k + 1 , where n=2k(2l+1)n=2^k(2l+1) for some k,lk,l nonnegative integers. Find the smallest nn such that f(1)+f(2)+...+f(n)≥123456f(1) + f(2) + ... + f(n) \geq 123456 .

Problem 4

An infinite road has traffic lights at intervals of 1500m. The lights are all synchronised and are alternately green for 32\frac 32 minutes and red for 1 minute. For which vv can a car travel at a constant speed of vv m/s without ever going through a red light?

Problem 5

Let XX the set of all sequences {a1,a2,…,a2000}\{a_1, a_2,\ldots , a_{2000}\} , such that each of the first 1000 terms is 0, 1 or 2, and each of the remaining terms is 0 or 1. The distance between two members aa and bb of XX is defined as the number of ii for which aia_i and bib_i are different.

Find the number of functions f:X→Xf : X \to X which preserve the distance.

Problem 6

Let it be is a wooden unit cube. We cut along every plane which is perpendicular to the segment joining two distinct vertices and bisects it. How many pieces do we get?
