Other problems

Problem 1

p(x1,x2,...,xn)p(x_1, x_2, ... , x_n) is a polynomial with integer coefficients. For each positive integer r,k(r)r, k(r) is the number of nn -tuples (a1,a2,...,an)(a_1, a_2,... , a_n) such that 0≤ai≤r−10 \le a_i \le r-1 and p(a1,a2,...,an)p(a_1, a_2, ... , a_n) is prime to rr . Show that if uu and vv are coprime then k(u⋅v)=k(u)⋅k(v)k(u\cdot v) = k(u)\cdot k(v) , and if p is prime then k(ps)=pn(s−1)k(p)k(p^s) = p^{n(s-1)} k(p) .

Problem 2

Given a point pp inside a convex polyhedron PP . Show that there is a face FF of PP such that the foot of the perpendicular from pp to FF lies in the interior of FF .

Problem 3

Two players play alternately. The first player is given a pair of positive integers (x1,y1)(x_1, y_1) . Each player must replace the pair (xn,yn)(x_n, y_n) that he is given by a pair of non-negative integers (xn+1,yn+1)(x_{n+1}, y_{n+1}) such that xn+1=min(xn,yn)x_{n+1} = min(x_n, y_n) and yn+1=max(xn,yn)−k⋅xn+1y_{n+1} = max(x_n, y_n)- k\cdot x_{n+1} for some positive integer kk . The first player to pass on a pair with yn+1=0y_{n+1} = 0 wins. Find for which values of x1/y1x_1/y_1 the first player has a winning strategy.

Problem 4

Given points A1(x1,y1,z1),A2(x2,y2,z2),..,An(xn,yn,zn)A_1 (x_1, y_1, z_1), A_2 (x_2, y_2, z_2), .., A_n (x_n, y_n, z_n) let P(x,y,z)P (x, y, z) be the point which minimizes Σ(∣x−xi∣+∣y−yi∣+∣z−zi∣)\Sigma ( |x - x_i| + |y -y_i| + |z -z_i| ) . Give an example (for each n>4n > 4 ) of points AiA_i for which the point PP lies outside the convex hull of the points AiA_i .

Problem 5

AA and BB wish to divide a cake into two pieces. Each wants the largest piece he can get. The cake is a triangular prism with the triangular faces horizontal. AA chooses a point PP on the top face. BB then chooses a vertical plane through the point PP to divide the cake. BB chooses which piece to take. Which point PP should AA choose in order to secure as large a slice as possible?
