BALKAN 2012 Problem 3

  • Paper

Let nn be a positive integer. Let Pn={2n,2n−1⋅3,2n−2⋅32,…,3n}P_{n}=\left\{2^{n}, 2^{n-1} \cdot 3,2^{n-2} \cdot 3^{2}, \ldots, 3^{n}\right\}. For each subset XX of PnP_{n}, we write SXS_{X} for the sum of all elements of XX, with the convention that S∅=0S_{\emptyset}=0 where ∅\emptyset is the empty set. Suppose that yy is a real number with 0≤y≤3n+1−2n+10 \leq y \leq 3^{n+1}-2^{n+1}. Prove that there is a subset YY of PnP_{n} such that 0≤y−SY<2n0 \leq y-S_{Y}<2^{n}
