AMC 12 2009b Problem 20

  • Paper

A convex polyhedron QQ has vertices V1,V2,…,VnV_1,V_2,\ldots,V_n, and 100100 edges. The polyhedron is cut by planes P1,P2,…,PnP_1,P_2,\ldots,P_n in such a way that plane PkP_k cuts only those edges that meet at vertex VkV_k. In addition, no two planes intersect inside or on QQ. The cuts produce nn pyramids and a new polyhedron RR. How many edges does RR have?

\textbf{(A)}\ 200 \textbf{(B)}\ 2n \textbf{(C)}\ 300 \textbf{(D)}\ 400 \textbf{(E)}\ 4n
