AIME 2010a Problem 13

  • Paper
  • Answer

Rectangle ABCDABCD and a semicircle with diameter ABAB are coplanar and have nonoverlapping interiors. Let R\mathcal{R} denote the region enclosed by the semicircle and the rectangle. Line ℓ\ell meets the semicircle, segment ABAB, and segment CDCD at distinct points NN, UU, and TT, respectively. Line ℓ\ell divides region R\mathcal{R} into two regions with areas in the ratio 1:21: 2. Suppose that AU=84AU = 84, AN=126AN = 126, and UB=168UB = 168. Then DADA can be represented as mnm\sqrt {n}, where mm and nn are positive integers and nn is not divisible by the square of any prime. Find m+nm + n.
