USAMO 1993 Problem 5

  • Day 2

A sequence xn\mathrm{x}_{\mathrm{n}} of positive reals satisfies xn−1xn+1≤xn2\mathrm{x}_{n-1} \mathrm{x}_{\mathrm{n}+1} \leq \mathrm{x}_{\mathrm{n}}{ }^{2}. Let an\mathrm{a}_{\mathrm{n}} be the average of the terms x0,x1,…,xn\mathrm{x}_{0}, \mathrm{x}_{1}, \ldots, \mathrm{x}_{\mathrm{n}} and bnb_{n} be the average of the terms x1,x2,…,xnx_{1}, x_{2}, \ldots, x_{n}. Show that anbn−1≥an−1bna_{n} b_{n-1} \geq a_{n-1} b_{n}.
