USAMO 1993 Problem 3

  • Day 1
  • Answer

Let S\mathrm{S} be the set of functions f\mathrm{f} defined on reals in the closed interval [0,1][0,1] with non-negative real values such that f(1)=1\mathrm{f}(1)=1 and f(x)+f(y)≤f(x+y)\mathrm{f}(\mathrm{x})+\mathrm{f}(\mathrm{y}) \leq \mathrm{f}(\mathrm{x}+\mathrm{y}) for all x,y\mathrm{x}, \mathrm{y} such that x+y≤1\mathrm{x}+\mathrm{y} \leq 1. What is the smallest k\mathrm{k} such that f(x)≤\mathrm{f}(\mathrm{x}) \leq kx\mathrm{kx} for all f\mathrm{f} in S\mathrm{S} and all x\mathrm{x} ?
