Day 1

Problem 1

  • Day 1

There are a+ba+b bowls arranged in a row, numbered 11 through a+ba+b , where aa and bb are given positive integers. Initially, each of the first aa bowls contains an apple, and each of the last bb bowls contains a pear. A legal move consists of moving an apple from bowl ii to bowl i+1i+1 and a pear from bowl jj to bowl j−1j-1 , provided that the difference i−ji-j is even. We permit multiple fruits in the same bowl at the same time. The goal is to end up with the first bb bowls each containing a pear and the last aa bowls each containing an apple. Show that this is possible if and only if the product abab is even.

Problem 4

  • Day 2

Let ABCABC be a triangle with ∠ABC\angle ABC obtuse. The AA -excircle is a circle in the exterior of △ABC\triangle ABC that is tangent to side BCBC of the triangle and tangent to the extensions of the other two sides. Let EE , FF be the feet of the altitudes from BB and CC to lines ACAC and ABAB , respectively. Can line EFEF be tangent to the AA -excircle?

Let nn be a nonnegative integer. Determine the number of ways that one can choose (n+1)2(n+1)^2 sets Si,j⊆{1,2,…,2n}S_{i,j}\subseteq\{1,2,\ldots,2n\} , for integers i,ji,j with 0≤i,j≤n0\leq i,j\leq n , such that:

  • for all 0≤i,j≤n0\leq i,j\leq n , the set Si,jS_{i,j} has i+ji+j elements; and
  • Si,j⊆Sk,lS_{i,j}\subseteq S_{k,l} whenever 0≤i≤k≤n0\leq i\leq k\leq n and 0≤j≤l≤n0\leq j\leq l\leq n .

  • Day 2

Two rational numbers mn\tfrac{m}{n} and nm\tfrac{n}{m} are written on a blackboard, where mm and nn are relatively prime positive integers. At any point, Evan may pick two of the numbers xx and yy written on the board and write either their arithmetic mean x+y2\tfrac{x+y}{2} or their harmonic mean 2xyx+y\tfrac{2xy}{x+y} on the board as well. Find all pairs (m,n)(m,n) such that Evan can write 1 on the board in finitely many steps.
