Other problems

Problem 1

Let A=A(x,y)A=A(x, y) and B=B(x,y)B=B(x, y) be two-variable polynomials with real coefficients. Suppose that A(x,y)/B(x,y)A(x, y) / B(x, y) is a polynomial in xx for infinitely many values of yy, and a polynomial in yy for infinitely many values of xx. Prove that BB divides AA, meaning there exists a third polynomial CC with real coefficients such that A=B⋅CA=B \cdot C.

Problem 2

Let ABCA B C be a scalene triangle with orthocenter HH and circumcenter OO and denote by M,NM, N the midpoints of AH‾,BC‾\overline{A H}, \overline{B C}. Suppose the circle γ\gamma with diameter AH‾\overline{A H} meets the circumcircle of ABCA B C at G≠AG \neq A, and meets line AN‾\overline{A N} at Q≠AQ \neq A. The tangent to γ\gamma at GG meets line OMO M at PP. Show that the circumcircles of △GNQ\triangle G N Q and △MBC\triangle M B C intersect on PN‾\overline{P N}.

Problem 3

Decide whether or not there exists a nonconstant polynomial Q(x)Q(x) with integer coefficients with the following property: for every positive integer n>2n>2, the numbers Q(0),Q(1),Q(2),…,Q(n−1)Q(0), Q(1), Q(2), \ldots, Q(n-1) produce at most 0.499n0.499 n distinct residues when taken modulo nn.

Problem 4

Prove that if nn and kk are positive integers satisfying φk(n)=1\varphi^{k}(n)=1, then n≤3kn \leq 3^{k}. (Here φk\varphi^{k} denotes kk applications of the Euler phi function.)

Problem 5

In the coordinate plane are finitely many walls, which are disjoint line segments, none of which are parallel to either axis. A bulldozer starts at an arbitrary point and moves in the +x+x direction. Every time it hits a wall, it turns at a right angle to its path, away from the wall, and continues moving. (Thus the bulldozer always moves parallel to the axes.) Prove that it is impossible for the bulldozer to hit both sides of every wall.

Problem 6

Let ABCA B C be a triangle with incenter II, and whose incircle is tangent to BC‾,CA‾\overline{B C}, \overline{C A}, AB‾\overline{A B} at D,E,FD, E, F, respectively. Let KK be the foot of the altitude from DD to EF‾\overline{E F}. Suppose that the circumcircle of △AIB\triangle A I B meets the incircle at two distinct points C1C_{1} and C2C_{2}, while the circumcircle of △AIC\triangle A I C meets the incircle at two distinct points B1B_{1} and B2B_{2}. Prove that the radical axis of the circumcircles of △BB1B2\triangle B B_{1} B_{2} and △CC1C2\triangle C C_{1} C_{2} passes through the midpoint MM of DK‾\overline{D K}.
