Day 1

Problem 1

  • Day 1
  • Answer

(a) Prove that every positive integer nn can be written uniquely in the form

n=∑j=12k+1(−1)j−12mjn=\sum_{j=1}^{2 k+1}(-1)^{j-1} 2^{m_{j}}

where k≥0k \geq 0 and 0≤m1<m2<⋯<m2k+10 \leq m_{1}<m_{2}<\cdots<m_{2 k+1} are integers. This number kk is called the weight of nn. (b) Find (in closed form) the difference between the number of positive integers at most 220172^{2017} with even weight and the number of positive integers at most 220172^{2017} with odd weight.

Problem 2

  • Day 1
  • Answer

Determine all positive integers nn satisfying the following condition: for every monic polynomial PP of degree at most nn with integer coefficients, there exists a positive integer k≤nk \leq n, and k+1k+1 distinct integers x1,x2,…,xk+1x_{1}, x_{2}, \ldots, x_{k+1} such that

P(x1)+P(x2)+⋯+P(xk)=P(xk+1)P\left(x_{1}\right)+P\left(x_{2}\right)+\cdots+P\left(x_{k}\right)=P\left(x_{k+1}\right)

Semen Petrov, Russia Note. A polynomial is monic if the coefficient of the highest power is one.

Problem 3

  • Day 1
  • Answer

Let nn be an integer greater than 1 and let XX be an nn-element set. A non-empty collection of subsets A1,…,AkA_{1}, \ldots, A_{k} of XX is tight if the union A1∪⋯∪AkA_{1} \cup \cdots \cup A_{k} is a proper subset of XX and no element of XX lies in exactly one of the AiA_{i} s. Find the largest cardinality of a collection of proper non-empty subsets of XX, no non-empty subcollection of which is tight.

Note. A subset AA of XX is proper if A≠XA \neq X. The sets in a collection are assumed to be distinct. The whole collection is assumed to be a subcollection.

Problem 4

  • Day 2

In the Cartesian plane, let G1\mathcal{G}_{1} and G2\mathcal{G}_{2} be the graphs of the quadratic functions f1(x)=p1x2+q1x+r1f_{1}(x)=p_{1} x^{2}+q_{1} x+r_{1} and f2(x)=p2x2+q2x+r2f_{2}(x)=p_{2} x^{2}+q_{2} x+r_{2}, where p1>0>p2p_{1}>0>p_{2}. The graphs G1\mathcal{G}_{1} and G2\mathcal{G}_{2} cross at distinct points AA and BB. The four tangents to G1\mathcal{G}_{1} and G2\mathcal{G}_{2} at AA and BB form a convex quadrilateral which has an inscribed circle. Prove that the graphs G1\mathcal{G}_{1} and G2\mathcal{G}_{2} have the same axis of symmetry.

Problem 5

  • Day 2
  • Answer

Fix an integer n≥2n \geq 2. An n×nn \times n sieve is an n×nn \times n array with nn cells removed so that exactly one cell is removed from every row and every column. A stick is a 1×k1 \times k or k×1k \times 1 array for any positive integer kk. For any sieve AA, let m(A)m(A) be the minimal number of sticks required to partition AA. Find all possible values of m(A)m(A), as AA varies over all possible n×nn \times n sieves.

Problem 6

  • Day 2

Let ABCDA B C D be any convex quadrilateral and let P,Q,R,SP, Q, R, S be points on the segments AB,BC,CDA B, B C, C D, and DAD A, respectively. It is given that the segments PRP R and QSQ S dissect ABCDA B C D into four quadrilaterals, each of which has perpendicular diagonals. Show that the points P,Q,R,SP, Q, R, S are concyclic.
