Problem 1

Let AA be a finite collection of squares in the coordinate plane such that the vertices of all squares that belong to AA are (m,n),(m+1,n),(m,n+1)(m, n),(m+1, n),(m, n+1), and (m+1,n+1)(m+1, n+1) for some integers mm and nn. Show that there exists a subcollection BB of AA such that BB contains at least 25%25 \% of the squares in AA, but no two of the squares in BB have a common vertex.

Problem 2

Let ff be a bounded real function defined for all real numbers and satisfying for all real numbers xx the condition

f(x+13)+f(x+12)=f(x)+f(x+56)f\left(x+\frac{1}{3}\right)+f\left(x+\frac{1}{2}\right)=f(x)+f\left(x+\frac{5}{6}\right)

Show that ff is periodic. (A function ff is bounded, if there exists a number LL such that ∣f(x)∣<L|f(x)|<L for all real numbers xx. A function ff is periodic, if there exists a positive number kk such that f(x+k)=f(x)f(x+k)=f(x) for all real numbers xx.)

Problem 3

Determine the number of real roots of the equation

x8−x7+2x6−2x5+3x4−3x3+4x2−4x+52=0x^{8}-x^{7}+2 x^{6}-2 x^{5}+3 x^{4}-3 x^{3}+4 x^{2}-4 x+\frac{5}{2}=0

Problem 4

Let ABCDEFA B C D E F be a convex hexagon, in which each of the diagonals AD,BEA D, B E, and CFC F divides the hexagon in two quadrilaterals of equal area. Show that AD,BEA D, B E, and CFC F are concurrent.
