Day 1

Problem 1

  • Day 1

Let dd be any positive integer not equal to 2,52, 5 or 1313 . Show that one can find distinct a,ba,b in the set {2,5,13,d}\{2,5,13,d\} such that ab−1ab-1 is not a perfect square.

Problem 2

  • Day 1

Given a point P0P_0 in the plane of the triangle A1A2A3A_1A_2A_3 . Define As=As−3A_s=A_{s-3} for all s≥4s\ge4 . Construct a set of points P1,P2,P3,…P_1,P_2,P_3,\ldots such that Pk+1P_{k+1} is the image of PkP_k under a rotation center Ak+1A_{k+1} through an angle 120o120^o clockwise for k=0,1,2,…k=0,1,2,\ldots . Prove that if P1986=P0P_{1986}=P_0 , then the triangle A1A2A3A_1A_2A_3 is equilateral.

Problem 3

  • Day 1

To each vertex of a regular pentagon an integer is assigned, so that the sum of all five numbers is positive. If three consecutive vertices are assigned the numbers x,y,zx,y,z respectively, and y<0y<0 , then the following operation is allowed: x,y,zx,y,z are replaced by x+y,−y,z+yx+y,-y,z+y respectively. Such an operation is performed repeatedly as long as at least one of the five numbers is negative. Determine whether this procedure necessarily comes to an end after a finite number of steps.

Problem 4

  • Day 2

Let A,BA,B be adjacent vertices of a regular nn -gon ( n≥5n\ge5 ) with center OO . A triangle XYZXYZ , which is congruent to and initially coincides with OABOAB , moves in the plane in such a way that YY and ZZ each trace out the whole boundary of the polygon, with XX remaining inside the polygon. Find the locus of XX .

Problem 5

  • Day 2

Find all functions ff defined on the non-negative reals and taking non-negative real values such that: f(2)=0,f(x)≠0f(2)=0,f(x)\ne0 for 0≤x<20\le x<2 , and f(xf(y))f(y)=f(x+y)f(xf(y))f(y)=f(x+y) for all x,yx,y .

Problem 6

  • Day 2

Given a finite set of points in the plane, each with integer coordinates, is it always possible to color the points red or white so that for any straight line LL parallel to one of the coordinate axes the difference (in absolute value) between the numbers of white and red points on LL is not greater than 11 ?
