Day 1

Problem 1

  • Day 1
  • Answer

There are n⩾3n \geqslant 3 positive real numbers a1,a2,…,ana_{1}, a_{2}, \ldots, a_{n}. For each 1⩽i⩽n1 \leqslant i \leqslant n we let bi=ai−1+ai+1aib_{i}=\frac{a_{i-1}+a_{i+1}}{a_{i}} (here we define a0a_{0} to be ana_{n} and an+1a_{n+1} to be a1a_{1} ). Assume that for all ii and jj in the range 1 to nn, we have ai⩽aja_{i} \leqslant a_{j} if and only if bi⩽bjb_{i} \leqslant b_{j}.

Prove that a1=a2=⋯=ana_{1}=a_{2}=\cdots=a_{n}.

Problem 2

  • Day 1

We are given an acute triangle ABCA B C. Let DD be the point on its circumcircle such that ADA D is a diameter. Suppose that points KK and LL lie on segments ABA B and ACA C, respectively, and that DKD K and DLD L are tangent to circle AKLA K L.

Show that line KLK L passes through the orthocentre of ABCA B C. The altitudes of a triangle meet at its orthocentre.

Problem 3

  • Day 1
  • Answer

Let kk be a positive integer. Lexi has a dictionary D\mathcal{D} consisting of some kk-letter strings containing only the letters AA and BB. Lexi would like to write either the letter AA or the letter BB in each cell of a k×kk \times k grid so that each column contains a string from D\mathcal{D} when read from top-to-bottom and each row contains a string from D\mathcal{D} when read from left-to-right.

What is the smallest integer mm such that if D\mathcal{D} contains at least mm different strings, then Lexi can fill her grid in this manner, no matter what strings are in D\mathcal{D} ?

Problem 4

  • Day 2

Turbo the snail sits on a point on a circle with circumference 1. Given an infinite sequence of positive real numbers c1,c2,c3,…c_{1}, c_{2}, c_{3}, \ldots, Turbo successively crawls distances c1,c2,c3,…c_{1}, c_{2}, c_{3}, \ldots around the circle, each time choosing to crawl either clockwise or counterclockwise. For example, if the sequence c1,c2,c3,…c_{1}, c_{2}, c_{3}, \ldots is 0.4,0.6,0.3,…0.4,0.6,0.3, \ldots, then Turbo may start crawling as follows:

Determine the largest constant C>0C>0 with the following property: for every sequence of positive real numbers c1,c2,c3,…c_{1}, c_{2}, c_{3}, \ldots with ci<Cc_{i}<C for all ii, Turbo can (after studying the sequence) ensure that there is some point on the circle that it will never visit or crawl across.

Problem 5

  • Day 2

We are given a positive integer s⩾2s \geqslant 2. For each positive integer kk, we define its twist k′k^{\prime} as follows: write kk as as+ba s+b, where a,ba, b are non-negative integers and b<sb<s, then k′=bs+ak^{\prime}=b s+a. For the positive integer nn, consider the infinite sequence d1,d2,…d_{1}, d_{2}, \ldots where d1=nd_{1}=n and di+1d_{i+1} is the twist of did_{i} for each positive integer ii.

Prove that this sequence contains 1 if and only if the remainder when nn is divided by s2−1s^{2}-1 is either 1 or ss.

Problem 6

  • Day 2

Let ABCA B C be a triangle with circumcircle Ω\Omega. Let SbS_{b} and ScS_{c} respectively denote the midpoints of the arcs ACA C and ABA B that do not contain the third vertex. Let NaN_{a} denote the midpoint of arc BACB A C (the arc BCB C containing AA ). Let II be the incentre of ABCA B C. Let ωb\omega_{b} be the circle that is tangent to ABA B and internally tangent to Ω\Omega at SbS_{b}, and let ωc\omega_{c} be the circle that is tangent to ACA C and internally tangent to Ω\Omega at ScS_{c}. Show that the line INaI N_{a}, and the line through the intersections of ωb\omega_{b} and ωc\omega_{c}, meet on Ω\Omega.

The incentre of a triangle is the centre of its incircle, the circle inside the triangle that is tangent to all three sides.
