  • Answer

Let a,b,c,d,e,fa, b, c, d, e, f be real numbers such that the polynomial

p(x)=x8−4x7+7x6+ax5+bx4+cx3+dx2+ex+fp(x)=x^{8}-4 x^{7}+7 x^{6}+a x^{5}+b x^{4}+c x^{3}+d x^{2}+e x+f

factorises into eight linear factors x−xix-x_{i}, with xi>0x_{i}>0 for i=1,2,…,8i=1,2, \ldots, 8. Determine all possible values of ff.

Problem 2

  • Paper

Suppose ABCDA B C D is a square piece of cardboard with side length aa. On a plane are two parallel lines ℓ1\ell_{1} and ℓ2\ell_{2}, which are also aa units apart. The square ABCDA B C D is placed on the plane so that sides ABA B and ADA D intersect ℓ1\ell_{1} at EE and FF respectively. Also, sides CBC B and CDC D intersect ℓ2\ell_{2} at GG and HH respectively. Let the perimeters of △AEF\triangle A E F and △CGH\triangle C G H be m1m_{1} and m2m_{2} respectively. Prove that no matter how the square was placed, m1+m2m_{1}+m_{2} remains constant.

Problem 3

Let k≥14k \geq 14 be an integer, and let pkp_{k} be the largest prime number which is strictly less than kk. You may assume that pk≥3k/4p_{k} \geq 3 k / 4. Let nn be a composite integer. Prove: (a) if n=2pkn=2 p_{k}, then nn does not divide (n−k)(n-k) !; (b) if n>2pkn>2 p_{k}, then nn divides (n−k)(n-k) !.

  • Answer

Given two positive integers mm and nn, find the smallest positive integer kk such that among any kk people, either there are 2m2 m of them who form mm pairs of mutually acquainted people or there are 2n2 n of them forming nn pairs of mutually unacquainted people.
